The premiere of NCIS: LA’s 13th season is part of CBS’s mass renewal of NCIS shows, including the original NCIS and the premiere of NCIS: Hawaii.
NCIS: Los Angeles has been renewed for a 13th season. The series, a
spinoff of the original NCIS, premiered on CBS in 2009 and has since run
for 12 seasons. Starring Chris O’ Donnell and LL Cool J, NCIS: LA
explores the lives and ongoing cases of agents at Los Angeles’ Office of
Special Projects, a subgroup of the Naval Crime Investigative Service
that deals specifically with dangerous, undercover assignments. While
critical reception for the series has been a mixed bag, NCIS: LA has
remained a fan-favorite among CBS’s procedural dramas.
According to Deadline, CBS’s upcoming season will boast three series
from the NCIS franchise: the original, NCIS – renewed for its 19th
season, the newly-picked-up NCIS: Hawaii, and NCIS: LA. While NCIS: LA
was not originally included in CBS’s massive renewal of NCIS
programming, contracts with the show’s stars have now been finalized.
Both O’Donnell and LL Cool J are set to return, and the show was ordered
straight to series. R. Scott Gemmill, who serves as a showrunner and
executive producer on NCIS: LA, will also be returning.
While NCIS: LA is not as massively viewed as its 18-season forefather,
the series has continued to remain a staple in CBS’s primetime lineup.
CBS Studios’ deal with O’Donnell and LL Cool J is considered one of the
most lucrative deals in television, so there is no wonder CBS kept NCIS:
LA in its schedule. Additionally, with the much-anticipated premiere of
NCIS: Hawaii – the first of its franchise to feature a female lead –
NCIS: LA will make for a solid lead-in for the newest NCIS. CBS’s block
of NCIS programming will also drum up excitement for CBS’s two other
procedural additions, FBI: International and CSI: Vegas. The current
season of NCIS: Los Angeles concludes on May 23.
