NCIS is preparing for the season 18 finale, with a recent teaser for the episode, Rule 91, bringing more questions than answers. But what does Rule 91 mean?
NCIS is finishing for another season, with fans getting ready for the
dramatic finale on May 25. CBS just released a new image for the finale,
teasing a new mystery for Leroy Jethro Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) to
solve, a boat with the name Rule 91. But what does Gibbs’ Rule 91 mean?
What does Gibbs’ Rule 91 mean?
Over the last season of NCIS, Gibbs has been constructing his boat, now as the season finale approaches, it looks like he has finished the task.
The final episode of season 18 is titled, Rule 91, the name Gibbs has christened his boat with.
The mystery of Rule 91 deepens as fans will be familiar with Gibbs’ list of rules, though 91 has never been mentioned in the show.
Naming a ship is typically the last thing to do before taking it out
onto the water, with the season coming to an end, Gibbs’ could be
sailing away for the last time.
Fans need not fear though, as it is unlikely Gibbs will be leaving the show for good.
CBS recently confirmed the renewal of NCIS for season 19, with Mark Harmon returning once again as Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
However, it isn’t clear in what capacity he will be returning, with many rumours before the renewal suggesting Harmon was leaving the show for good.
There isn’t a confirmation by CBS on the number of episodes he will
appear in, if he will continue to lead the show, or if his inclusion
will be more of a cameo.
Rule 91 might be his last rule and a way for him to retire away from the hard life in NCIS.
Fans don’t have long to find out, with the final premiering May 25, 2021.
CBS has released a synopsis of the upcoming finale, giving fans a further insight on what to expect for Gibbs next go-around.
It reads: “While pursuing a dangerous arms dealer, the team is
shocked when Bishop is implicated in an old NSA leak. Also, Gibbs and
Marcie realize that the k****r they’ve been tracking may be onto them.”
Mark Harmon is an NCIS veteran, having starred in the series since it
premiered back in 2003, he later went on to appear in the spin-off
series NCIS: New Orleans from 2014 – 2018.
Fans have taken to Twitter to add their speculation over the meaning of Rule 91 and how it could affect the season finale.
One fan wrote: “The rule 91 it has to be something important, simple and with a strong meaning, that’s the only explanation that comes to my mind about why Gibbs is painted that in the boat.”
Another added: “Why is Gibbs naming the boat rule 91?? I wanna know
what the rule means sooo bad Loudly crying face name of the finale and
boat name? it has to be some deep and important rule.”
A third continued: “I was reading the synopsis for the season finale of
#ncis and I’m kinda scared. It’s titled “rule 91” and that rule doesn’t
exist. AND both Ellie and Gibbs are in danger so like I’m terrified.”
The events and impact of Rule 91 will likely affect the upcoming 19th season and Gibbs’ place within it.
There are no details on the next season, outside of the knowledge Mark Harmon will return in some capacity.
The release date for season 19 is expected to be early 2022, with a trailer likely to drop in late 2021.
NCIS is available to watch weekly on CBS.
